At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action. During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the jockeys. The third vet is based at the stable yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race.
It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground. This does not reflect on the severity of an injury but allows the vet some privacy and the horse a calmer environment in which to make a recovery. Please do not assume the worst if you see the screens erected around an injured horse.
