The Jenners & Frasers Ladies Day at Musselburgh brought weather to rival the Royal Jubilee Thames Pageant but 9000 race goers shrugged off the rainy conditions and were determined to enjoy the showcase event.
The racecourse splashed out on 4500 ponchos which were handed out free to racegoers while extra marquees were sourced and erected at the last minute to provide valuable indoor cover.
A social media campaign and email alert was successful in alerting Ladies Day guests to the conditions and many fashion conscious race goers arrived with wellies and umbrellas in matching colours to their glamourous outfits.
The Queen of Style event and a £3000 cash prize was won by Dayna Turnbull of Restalrig, Edinburgh, and leading from the front for East Lothian was Tranent couple Emma Brown and Scott Logan, who were voted the winning couple in the Style Icon event, collecting a Love Suite hotel package courtesy of the Edinburgh Malmaison.
Musselburgh Racecourse commercial manager, Karen Taylor, said the eighth sell-out Ladies Day was an outstanding success despite the conditions.
She said: “Our target attendance was 9000 and the official attendance was 8901 which shows that even the unpredictable Scottish summer can’t dent the popularity of Ladies Day.
“We used social media extensively to inform guests on how to best prepare for the weather and people wore extra layers and adapted their outfits to suit, with matching wellies and ponchos.
“The early feedback we have received has been very positive and it matches the atmosphere on the day which was brilliant. It seems it takes more than rain to dampen the spirits of Ladies Day regulars and the day was a great success.”
