A record 6300 attendance crowned a successful Edinburgh Cup Race Day at Musselburgh Racecourse and set the scene for a sell-out Stobo Castle Ladies Day on 17 June.
Racecourse chief executive Bill Farnsworth said he was delighted with the quality of racing and the winners of the three feature races underlined why Musselburgh is seen as top attraction for leading UK trainers. In the £80,000 Edinburgh Gin’s Edinburgh Cup, the top weight Time To Study gave trainer Mark Johnston his fourth win in this prestigious event with jockey Joe Fanning pipping Alabaster by a head.
A new Class 1 Listed race, the Edinburgh Gin Maggie Dickson Fillies’ Stakes, didn’t disappoint and was won by the Hugo Palmer trained Unforgettable Filly, which was followed home by Pirouette and Glitter Girl. The winner was last seen out when sixth in the first fillies’ classic of the season, the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket
Mr Farnsworth said: “There was a cracking atmosphere and we were delighted with how the day went both on and off the track. The Edinburgh Cup is now firmly established as a prime event and the fact that the winner Time to Study and second placed Alabaster are both entered for The Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot, speaks volumes about the quality of the Edinburgh Cup.
“The attendance was slightly up on last year and we are heading in the right direction for growing the crowd to 7000 and more in future years. Meanwhile, sales for Stobo Castle Ladies Day on 17 June are doing extremely well and we expect it to sell-out in the next week.”
In the ebfstallions.com Edinburgh Castle Stakes, the Richard Fahey trained It Don’t Come Easy broke the 5 furlong course record for two year olds with Paul Hanagan on board, bettering Arasong’s 1994 previous best by 0.04 seconds.
