Racing Preview - The Scottish Flat Season Finale 2026

THE curtain comes down on the 2026 Flat season in Scotland with a bumper eight-race card at Musselburgh.

And two of the contests give nods to a horse and a jockey who both enjoyed plenty of success at the East Lothian venue.

The Joe Fanning Fond Farewell Handicap is named after a popular Irishman that retired earlier this season having ridden a remarkable 192 winners from 1,311 rides at the track.     

It is a tally that sees him by far and away the winningmost jockey of all time at Musselburgh with his nearest pursuer Paul Mulrennan a distant second on 123. 

The concluding event is the Thank You For The Fun Gweedore Handicap, fittingly a seven-furlong race for Katie Scott’s stable flagbearer.

Gweedore appeared 19 times at Musselburgh where he won six races (five over seven furlongs and once over a mile) as well as coming second six times and third twice.

Now enjoying his retirement as a nine-year-old, he won 13 times in all during a glittering career when he amassed an impressive win and place prize haul of £212,000.

At £30,000, the most valuable race of the day is the British Stallion Studs EBF Restricted Maiden Stakes.

Catching the eye on debut is Richard Hannon-trained filly Sequoiadendron, who is the first foal out of a mare with US Grade 1 winners on her side of the family.
