GALLUS NORMAN, sent off at 14/1, stormed home under Amie Waugh to land the Portobello Cup at Musselburgh.

One of four in the 2m 2f marathon for Jim Goldie, he slammed Fast Fred by three and a quarter lengths with stable companions Trojan Sun and Furhaan back in third and fourth.

“He’s done that well and nice ground and a trip is the key for him,” Goldie said. “We tried to make him a bumper horse but he’s going to be alright on the Flat as that’s his third win this year.

“We didn’t give him an entry in the Cesarewitch but he wouldn’t have got in anyway. There used to be a two-mile handicap at Ayr, which would have been ideal for him, so I don’t know where we’ll go next - he’s certainly one of look forward to.”

There was drama before the race when heavily-backed favourite Florida Dreams was withdrawn after getting upset in the stalls.

Novak landed the eleventh race of his career when taking the AAB Group And Bibby Financial Services for Iain Jardine and Andrew Mullen.

“He’s been a great servant and I’m delighted for his owners,” said the winning trainer. “We will keep him on the go and there might be something at Ayr next month for him.”
